Welcome
First off, many of you might ask the question, why learn Hebrew at all? Aren’t the translations good enough? Do I really need to spend all that time to learn another language?? Others may see the value in learning the Bible in its original languages, but actually learning Hebrew for themselves may seem like a daunting task indeed! Is it really possible that I could learn Hebrew? In this short post it probably is not possible to utterly convince you that it is imperative to learn the Hebrew language. Yet at the same time I have found it to be an extremely worthwhile activity. I once heard it described that learning to read the Bible in its original languages is like watching television in color as opposed to black and white. There are certain nuances of language (imagery, etc.) that is much clearer in the original languages that in the translations. The phrase “lost in translation” could easily (if not overly cliche) be applied here.
Yet, even if I have convinced you that it is worthwhile to learn Hebrew, you may still believe it to be impossible to achieve. Like watching an Olympic athlete swim the backstroke to a gold medal, reading Hebrew is something for intellectual all stars to accomplish. It may seem like a large goal to attain, but this site is all about breaking it down into managable chunks. You might not be able to pick up the Hebrew Tanakh in a week and read it cover to cover (something I can not do yet, either!) but you probably could learn understand the alphabet. The way to accomplish any goal is to break it down into smaller goals that build on one another. That’s what I hope to accomplish with this site. I am not an expert in the Hebrew language, but I am on the journey of learning the language with proficiency. I invite you to join me in this worthwhile pursuit and learn the Hebrew language.
