My New Hobby

Published February 7, 2008 by Erin

Like I really have time for a new hobby… but this is something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m so excited about it I just want to keep going. My mom came to me one day with an idea to make bags out of all the scraps of material she has from her interior design business. Well as we talked and researched bag designs and other things we could make, her idea kept getting bigger and bigger. We found some super cute patterns of bags online as well as some great fabric by Amy Butler … and we were inspired. We purchased a bunch of patterns and I went to the fabric store for some cheap fabric just so I could start practicing … since our idea had turned into building a business! :)

Well, here’s the first one… my first ever sewing project. I didn’t think it was too bad for my first one. I still need lots of practice but it’s a start. :) Now I need to find a sewing machine (since I’ve been traveling to Perrysburg, my mom’s house, to use hers). If you have one that you want to sell, I’d be happy to take it off your hands.

Cute bag! I am very impressed that this was your first sewing project. I know I couldn’t do that.

Good luck with the new business.

    Erin,
I have a sewing machine that is sitting in Carolyn and Larry’s bedroom, unused until I get back home. I’d like to have it back when we’re back to a settling down spot (but who knows when that will be? certainly not before July 2009) so until then I would love it if you could use it! I think Katie knows where it is up there. If you want to borrow it for awhile even to see what you need on a machine, go for it!! I would love to know that it’s being used.

Samuel has a new room!!  Well, it’s a shared room, but at least he has a corner now!

I’m not sure our youngest, Samuel, is going to make it to his first birthday. I think our daughter is trying to get rid of him. I think she loves him, she talks to him and about him often. But she has also done things to make us think otherwise. When he is in his swing she likes to push it beyond what it was meant to go. She likes to poke his eyes. She threw his favorite pacifier into the garbage disposal (unknown to Erin until she ran it). She has picked him up and dropped him repeatedly (and tried to pick him up many other times). She has taken his blanket, covered his face with it and laid on him. She has put a marble, a pretzel, a piece of pizza, and other things into his mouth. I’m just not sure if Samuel is going to make it because his older sister is out to get him.

This is Ethan’s way of saying this room is off limits for Alayna. Now every door in our house, even Alayna’s own room, has this sign. Even the outside doors. It’s Alayna’s catch 22 - can’t go in, can’t go out.

We went to the Midwest Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati a couple weeks ago.  It was crowded!! Besides the fact that they scheduled the conference to begin at the exact same time as opening day for the Cincinnati Reds (~10,000 convention goers + ~40,000 baseball fans = no available parking + lots of frustration!) it was a nice trip.  Samuel enjoyed the big bed, Erin and I took the floor. ;)
